my first inside out turning

Project by aldente posted 68 days ago 274 views 0 times favorited 4 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I’ve seen these type of orniments in magazines and on online. I’ve never done one. Nor have I tried an inside out turning. So here’s my first attempt at both. 3 of the 4 openings are closed off using epoxy, tinted with belive it or not red food color. It makes a red transluencant like window. When you catch light from behind it, it lights up. Inorder for the epoxy to work in the openings, I backed them with small pieces of plastic wrap. Then I would mix small amounts of the tinted epoxy, filling each hole by layers. If you just give the epoxy about 6-7 minutes between layers each layer melds with the previous. Once all holes are filled it’s back to the lathe for clean up of the excess epoxy. There is a little bell suspended from the inside top. This was a real blast to do. Oh, the bottom tip is 1/8 brass rod I ground to a point. It’s held in place with CA.

Sorry pics were taken with my phone.

without a reference it is difficult to tell how big this is. Could you tell us approximate dimensions?

Sorry it’s 11.5” tall and 1.5” at the belly. The belly is bubbinga and african blackwood. the top is burled elm and bubbinga. I should probablly get a better camera. The pics don’t do it justice.
