Various Carvings

These are my first 5 carvings that I have completed so far since picking up the carving bug…lol!
They aren’t the greatest, but I really enjoyed making them. All were carved out of maple, with the exception of the angel which was pine. Keith posted all of these in his project section for me previously, I believe….but I wanted to have something in my project section…so I’m just re-posting them : )

The Violet carving was my 1st, followed by the butterfly one (I love butterflies), next I believe I did the mermaid, and then the angel which I carved for my daughter. Her middle name is Rose, and her nickname is “Rosebud”...so in this carving I am the angel looking after my beautiful “Rosebud”. It has sentamental value to her and I…so even though it’s probably the crudest carving job out of all of them I think it’s the project that means the most to me so far. Lastly, the one of the woman that I call “exposed”. It represents the vulnerability that is felt when you expose yourself (both literally, and emotionally).

Like I said, not the best…but they’re my very first attempts at carving. Dispite the random cuts on the fingers from slips of the chissels, several splinters, and knuckle scrapes…and ALOT of glue to repair what I unintentionally broke off…I very much enjoyed making each of these.

Liked them since I saw the first one Keith put on here. You have talent of your own.

I have carved a few things but you two are outta my league.

I’ll just have to keep on practicing.

Love the butterfly carving. I think you did an excellent job. I find relief carving to be very difficult. I’m working on one now that is practically my first. It will be a dog portrait- I hope. I have a blog going on as I carve it- you may be interested in watching my progress- or lack thereof: http://zeldapetportrait.blogspot.com/
Keep on carving and your technique will get better with every project. Your sense of design is already quite good. Donna

Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement!

I’ve only had about a years worth of experience in carving….so my technique probably leaves alot to be desired. These were all great learning experiences for me.

The thing I really like about carving is that it doesn’t have to be precise, like say…cabinet building or box making. If I flub up or break off a fragile piece by mistake I can simple modify the design…just leave that part off or cover the mistake by making a few small changes. Not a single carving that I’ve completed has turned out like the original design…lol!
