Hi all and Happy New Year. I was looking for inspiration to make a couple of guitar stands for my daughters for their Christmas presents. There were any number of different designs both here on the ‘jocks and all over the internet but in the end, I guess the music led me where I needed to go. The hardest part of the whole thing was figuring out how to get them stable enough to hold their own if someone or some animal happened to run into them. The weight of the front and the width of the back keep things quite stable and, as with most of my projects, how to get it done just happened. The backs are made from book-matched 1×4’s. The note and treble clef kind of started the design of things and adding the flags on the notes gave me the strength needed to support a standard size acoustic guitar but I was struggling with how to support the neck. As ours is something of a close-knit neighborhood, I had a couple of the guys in the shop for a beer one night and got the suggestion for the sharp symbol at the top for the neck and … voila. Maple and Padauk were used to match to the respective guitars of each of the girls. That padauk is a beautiful wood but a real chore to work. Enjoy.
