Ladies and gentlemen,
This project was born somewhere at the local IKEA. I realized there that I wanted a simple and practical bed with the feel of beautiful real wood, chopped, carved, and finished myself.
Here it is:- Honduras mahogany – I didn’t want to spend time working on a cheap wood. Mahogany is also good for carving.
- hard maple slats
- long 1” cocobolo pins to reinforce the tenons, and cocobolo plugs to hide 4” socket bolts
- the first finishing layer is a shellac sealer, and then I used a few layers of the mix: 1/3 High Gloss Waterlox, 1/3 pure tung oil, 1/3 turpentine, which adds a nice amber hue.
I carved the headboard in the Japanese style using the braided pattern Higaki.
Other ideas, plugs and rounded edges, sparked my mind when I visited The Gamble House in Pasadena.
I’m in a hurry to make these photos while the bed is still brand new. Its mahogany will darken as time goes by, nicks and scratches will appear, waiting for another coat of the magical mix.

Thank you all very much for the compliments.
I found that even a simple carving adds richness to any furniture.

I used SketchUp from Google.
It helps me to create templates for the routed edges.
