This is a cabinet that I built with a shoe box theme. One of my customers liked my shoe box cabinet that I make, but asked what if we turn it up and do more of a cabinet? They also saw a nightstand I had with a sliding top. They wanted to know if I could incorporate that into the design.

I did one better, I incorporated the sliding top and put a lock on it. I use a magnetic catch to release the top. You slide the magnetic key across the top until you hear it click. Once you tear it do you can open the top.

This project was completed in October 2015 using MDF, Maple and 1/2 Baltic Birch. The finish is a black lacquer.

For more info scroll down to the bottom of my shoe box storage page.

Very cool. Can you give more detail on the locking mechanism?

I saw a vintage gun cabinet once that used a magnet to slide a steel rod to lock it.

Have your say...
