I really wanted to try this out but didn’t want to invest much so I decided to make it from scrap ply. The ideal model would be less bulky and might be made of hardwood (I do like the look of ply though).
It works quite well (I live in the stone age and still don’t have a flat screen monitor), though my friend’s 22” monitor was a little too much weight. I used 1/4” bolts so I’m thinking that an upgrade to 3/8” would add more than enough holding power. If you look closely, you’ll notice the construction is actually very simple, it only took about an hour and a half start to finish.
Rather than mounting the monitor directly to the arm I made a sleeve (not pictured) that bolts to the monitor and then slides onto the arm, locking the monitor in place…it’s still mounted to that friend’s monitor.

I recently refurnished my bedroom/office and thought of doing something like this for my monitor. I was going to base my design more on gyro-stabilizers used in cinema and the like. This design is pretty keen, though. Thanks for sharing. Great imagination!

That is very cool! As soon as I saw it I started thinking about how to use something like that or something similar in the shop or anywhere else for that matter. Thanks a lot for this post. hope you send more our way.

My fist thought was to make one for my laptop that I use to watch Fancast on my big screen. Very cool and good thinking outside the box.

Bud, Now that’s cool. When I first saw it, thought it was something for the space shuttle. Great design and that gave me some ideas. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Bud, I’m with you on the ply look. Unless it’s going into some prissy office, the ply gives it a great man cave feel.

When you get a monitor on it, could you post a pic? I can’t figure out how it’s gonna hold a monitor. Sorry, it’s a dumb blonde thing. It looks great though and I’m impressed that you designed and built something so complicated.
