Sometimes a piece of wood will yield many surprises when you start turning it. This is a sycamore hollow form that is 8 inches tall, 5 inches across at it’s widest point and wall thickness of 3/16”. The darker part of the hollow form was the part of the wood closest to the bark and the pure white was towards the pith. The dark line that runs almost through the middle was created by beetles. All the hollowing was done through a 3/4” hole. This was sanded to 400 grit and then I applied mimwax clear gloss poly while the piece was still on the lathe. The first two coats I applied with paper towels, and then applied four coats using 600 grit wet sandpaper.

That is a real cool turning. Nice wood selecting and creation from it.

Really awesome piece of wood. The thumbnail shot looked good enough that I clicked on it, but the other shots blew me away.

Fantastic piece! Great hollowing form from only a 3/4 opening. Outstanding piece of wood.
Keep up the fantastic work.

Beautiful turning, and the contrasting colors of the wood really give it a special look. Well done.

Very cool! You couldn’t have glued up two pieces and got the line for the split of color to come out any better. What a great surprise and great look.
