After spending 150 hours, 40 hours and 600+ hours on intarsia projects this year, it’s refreshing to be able to knockout pieces from start to finish in an hour or so, some less. A big thanks to friend and LJer Ron F. who brought over all of his pen tools, accessories and pen know how to my shop to give me some pointers and show me what I needed to buy to start making these…I think he unleashed a pen monster.
I started off with the shaving kit with Ron’s tutelage (made out of cocobolo) and then I starting buying up on what i needed to start making these on my own. The first two pens were the Deer Hunter bolt action pens for a pair of brothers I work with. They gave me some exotic wood and helped me fix a table recently so I wanted to thank them back using some of their wood on a project. The other pens were all Christmas and Hanukkah gifts for family. The Princess pens were made from quilted purpleheart enhanced with a mini torch that really brought out that rich purple color, ambrosia maple and cascara. The faith pen was maple burl and the bolt action pen was a different ambrosia maple. The nautical pen was a special piece of cherry from a family tree used for other family heirloom pieces you can see in my earlier LJ posts.
