Thanks for the description in your blog. I’ve been asked to do basically the same thing for an in-law. Unfortunately, their cubby is out of square, the back being wider than the front. Makes things a bit more complicated. I think I’ll just anchor some 1×1 poplar like you did and let the shelf float.

My cubby had the same issue. I cut the shelves wider in the back than the front and have to lay them in (one side up, the other side on the cleat). They don’t slide in or out, so it should work the same for your in-law. Just make sure you don’t put the shelves to near each other or leave extra room at the top or bottom to maneuver them in.
