I took a lot of advice from you guys and did add a ramp from some bits of t-111 I had laying around. It works a bit like a ladder for them. I did have to set their food on top and put them on it one by one until they all had a chance to eat at the “Top of the World Restaurant”! I also set it a little lower to begin with so they don’t get nose bleeds… lol
P.S.
No more chick stuff for a while, I promise. Windmill is next…
Thanks for your help!
Jack

Well as long as your are on the subject. I use a similar roost in my coop but I hinged the top to the wall so I can swing it up out of the way when it comes time to do the poop scoop thing. I have a hook on the ceiling that holds it up. Never really thought of a side ramp they seem to make it up just fine with out it.
I can’t tell from the pictures but I hope you rounded of the corners of the rails.
Are you having trouble with them roosting on top of the nest boxes? I made mine with a forward sloped roof so they could not do that.

Hey Jack-
Looks like the chickens already are loving it !! Great idea incorporating the ramp into the roost.
Bok bok bok…bogowk
That’s chicken for “nice work”- LOL

My apologies to the Moody Blues. Les, I didn’t use hinges but re-cut the original so that it could fit snugly and yet be removable when I clean. The footprint of the coop is only 8×4 so the roost goes front to back at the angel you see. If I hinged it (I’ve seen that design), the birds below would have been pooped on by the birds above…

I think you misinterpreted my hinge idea. Where your roost leans against the wall I have hinges. I guess if the bottom or your roost hits the floor on the other side the hinge idea won’t work anyway.
I can almost guarantee eventually some chicken will try to roost on those flat toped nest boxes (-;

You are right about the flat top. So far they have been mostly ground birds. I suppose I could have put the hinges at the bottom and folded the roost against that wall. I might try that with a hook to hold it as I clean, hmmm.

The ladies have a spot to sit and gossip now. It is funny how they love to announce their work when they’ve laid an egg. Best of luck, BTKS

Hey Jack,
On the top of the nest boxes-
put a frame around the outside, throw some shavings in there, and let them roost on top of the boxes as well.
Some of my girls don’t like the confinement of the box.
Keep the girls happy, let ‘em lay where they want.

I might just try that. I’ll put in a tray of some sort to aid in cleaning though. Thanks for the idea!
