Hand-cranked Carpenter Automaton

I saw this automaton on a YouTube video done by Ben Brandt, and I had to make one for myself.

I put the design into Google Sketchup.

The entire assembly is built of common pine.

There is a total of 4 cams….....

1. lift arm and hammer
2. lift nail
3. rotate head right
4. rotate head left

It takes the carpenter 3 blows to drive the nail. After the 3rd blow, the hammer rises quickly back to the up position, while the nail takes a while to slowly raise back up into the original position. It took me a few trials to get the cam designs right to do this.

The neat part is seeing this carpenter in action, which you can by viewing the YouTube video I made of my model.

Thanks

Have a Merry Christmas

That’s very cool with the sound of the hammer hits, and the progression of the nail being pounded in !

Thanks!

Yes, I think it is cool to watch the model in motion!

I just finished the 2nd carousel.

This one is almost all red oak, versus more walnut on the 1st one.

I actually like the red oak version better, the walnut version is almost too dark.
