I finally got around to making a roost for the girls. I looked at a lot of designs but went with the ladder type. I used 2×2’s. I used a 1/4” round over to ease the sharp edges and attached the wood with a couple of 3” screws at each intersection. It measures 47 3/4” wide and 48” tall. I didn’t attach in to the wall so that it can be removed for cleaning. Funny, the chickens aren’t roosting on it. I can put them on the rungs but they won’t go by themselves. I find them sleeping under the roost. Did I wait too long? Any ideas?

The chicken coop looks great.
Hopefully the girls like it.

maybe they are mad ,
that you keep stealing their eggs ?
or that they might break ,
falling from that height ?
maybe a ramp to get up there ?

I might try a ramp or a small cherry picker…
My dog would like nothing more than to get in with them.

My ladies not only took to the roost on their own, I’ve got one named joker because she goes clear to the rafters to sleep. Same rafter, same spot every night. The name because one night, I counted and counted and kept coming up one short. Finally looked up and spotted her, hence the joker moniker.
I bet they start using the roost on their own, especially if they sense a preditor of some kind.
Best of luck, BTKS

I did that, used a round over bit on the router table. I didn’t put it higher so as to avoid nose bleeds…

My Chickens would stay on the ground also. The roster made so much noise, my wife made me get rid of them. I took them to the previous owner of my home. he has a menagerie outside his store for all the kids.

Somehow my wife convinced me to get chickens, we got little chicks about 5 months ago, and I built a shed and yard from scratch which I will post pics of soon. From your pics, I would say that 1. the roost appears a little steep where the next step would interfere with them roosting. I would lower the angle a bit by moving it away from the wall. and 2. your chicks look smaller than ours did when the finally started roosting. Not sure how old they are or what kind, but be patient, they will find their way up there as they grow.
We just got our first eggs last week, which was pretty exciting, and as skeptical as I was they are pretty low maintenance and kind of relaxing to watch. Plus they were a good excuse to pick up a few tools I needed to build the coop :)

Hey Jack,
I finally found my pics of my coop…
This is just shortly after it was built in the garage
Front and rear sliding windows for air when warm, the roof is vented also. The nesting boxes are built into the side with a lid on the outside- to steal eggs.
Okay so the roosting ladder….. I did the same as you did though I used closet dowel rod for rungs. I had it at an angle not as steep as what you have, and it is hinged so it can be lifted off the floor for cleaning. It can be seen lifted and hung in the pic. (It is the wood sticking out from the center right)
Very long story short… the girls never used it until I cleaned the coop and forgot to put it back in the down position. Seems they like being close to the roof, and almost horizontal on the ladder. I would suggest trying to get it off the floor, and making the angle more horizontal.

you should post this over at GardenTenders—lots of chicken “owners” over there and several coops have been posted this summer.

Nice looking coop. I have a waterer like yours as well as the old fashion metal type. They like to sit on the plastic one and poop on it…
I like your design.
