My wife wanted a custom made craft shelf that would house all of her scrap booking and craft supplies. We sat down and created the design in SketchUp to meet what she wanted. She wanted several 16” “cubes” to store items, as well as a couple large openings with adjustable shelves. Then she has a lot of special scrapbook paper that is 12” wide and long. She wanted a way to organize the different colors, etc. So, I made the paper shelves in the middle.
This ended up being way to heavy. I made all the shelves removable to lessen the weight, however, it was very hard to carry inside. If I did this again, I’d make into separate sections and connect in the room.
It’s all made of oak plywood, and then oak for the faces and veneers. The overall dimensions are 6’ high, 54 1/2” wide, and then 16” deep. The paper shelves were made out of 1/4” hardboard. I then made a semi circle on the front, and then used it as a template for all the others.
The paper shelves are dado’ed in at equal distances. I had to paint them first, and then finish the inside of the shelf space before attaching the face.
In the end, my wife was very happy with it. She filled it with her items within a couple of hours!
Btw, I LOVE using SketchUp for all of my designs. It really helps to get a view for what you want, and then it’s perfect for getting the design plans.
