It got me back into woodwork.

After 30 years in advertising, I went freelance but it was slow. Then my ex-boss and good friend, Ross, called me up. “I’m opening an art studio, and I need some furniture made. Can you do it?”

Well, I hadn’t touched anything in about 12 years. A few power tools were in a tin trunk; I’d recently given away my planes, scratchstocks and other hand tools to a furniture-maker friend. But in for a penny, in for a pound.

Ross originally wanted this recess closed up, with the bookcase next to it. The secret door was my idea … you know those ones where you think, “What have I done?! Idiot!”

It’s made from all the scrap wood that was already in the space – old cupboards and partitions, with only the frame of new wood. That was the second mistake – cleaning up the old mdf and chipboard took longer and cost more than buying new stuff. But hey, it’s what he wanted …

There’s a kinda build story here: http://imgur.com/a/LKesX

At the end of the day though, I’m happy I could give Ross something out of the ordinary. In a way, it’s become a talking point, and a symbol for his gallery (which, incidentally, is called “Bright”.)

I actually made this …. oooh, about 2 years ago, but haven’t put it on LJ before. It changed my direction in life, and made me decide to go into woodwork full time (though only time will prove whether that was wise).

Thanks for having a look!

Nice looking project. It will look great in Ross’s art studio.

Bummer that you got rid of your tools.

I bet a background in marketing will help with the business side of woodworking. I know that even though I am a good woodworker I suck at the sales side. If woodworking does not work out maybe you could offer your experience as a “manufacturer’s rep” (I think that is the correct term) for those of use who are sales challenged. If so PM me.
