This is a Christmas present for my brother-in-law. The knife is a kit from Rockler. The handles are East Indian Rosewood attached with 2-part epoxy. Both the wood and metal sides were wiped with mineral spirits before gluing and it seems to have worked well. I was worried about scratching the bolsters as I was sanding down the handles. They did get scratched, but sanding the bolsters and handles all the way to 1200 grit wet/dry paper solved the problem.
The box is made from 1/2” red oak with simple lap joints at the corners reinforced with 1/8” brass pins. (I love brass and oak!) The bottom and sliding lid are made from 1/4” red oak set into slots in the sides of the box. Both the box and knife handles are finished with Danish oil.
This was my first knife kit and first box as well. I’m pleased with how well they both turned out. Unfortunately I think I’ve become hooked on box making. (Knives I’ve been hooked on all my life)
