My biggest project yet is finished, a kitchen table and bench set made from yellow pine. My wife and I needed a heavy-duty, large, affordable table for our home and we both like farm tables, so this is what we came up with. It seats eight and is quite sturdy.

The lumber for the top, aprons, and benches came from yellow pine 2×10s and 2×12s from Lowes. The top is made from four 2×10s and the aprons are made from the quartersawn portions of the wide boards. The legs came from large pallets I pulled off a jobsite this past spring. The table joinery is simple—pegged mortise & tenons for the aprons to the legs, oak shrinkage buttons for the top to the frame, and tongue & groove and pegged mortise & tenon for tne breadboard ends. The aprons feature a bead moulding, which I plowed with a Stanley 45.

The benches are based on a Shaker meeting house design I found in a book. They don’t match the table, but were fun and easy to make and are rock-solid. I used cut nails from Tremont Nail Co. in the braces and legs.

The finish is Minwax English Chestnut. I used a pre-stain conditioner, then wiped on two coats of a 50/50 mix of stain and BLO, one coat of all stain, then three coats of Arm-R-Seal semi-gloss for a topcoat. There are a few light spots where the conditioner soaked into ragged grain unevenly. My wife loves it, but if I do this again I won’t use the conditioner and will make sure to more uniformly smooth my surface. The finish on the benches turned out much better.

Once again, it was another good learning experience and another simple, solid piece of furniture for our home.
