I had this design in my head for quite some time and I new that I had to have side tables so you can have a place for your plate and a beverage. and I must say those side tables (picnic butler) get a lot of use. Every BBQ I have, it’s the favorite place to eat.

I originally made this for my wife and her mom to have a place to sit out in the back yard together and watch the humming birds. and also to enter it in the Summer 2009 “Garden Bench” contest, But never got it entered. But knowing how useful those small tables had been the last three years I knew the ”personal picnic butler” contest was the contest to enter it in.

  • Made of Redwood, Alaskan White Cedar with just a touch of Greene and Greene style. I didn’t have enough redwood or Alaskan White Cedar so I combined them. I also wanted to put more Greene & Greene style into it but had no time.
Over all length = 7’8”
Bench (between arm rest) = 4’2”
Height = 6’

I put a water sealant on it. Any advice on any other finish would be welcomed. *

Thats a great looking bench setup. Nice job on the construction and mixed materials.

My outcoors benches I use an outdoor wood Cypress or similiar and no finish. I’ll just let the wood age.

I must agree with the rest of the posters. Great use of mixing the woods and I love the design. This should score you some big points with the wife and mother in-law

I like this as well. I have absolutely no doubt this would have won. I know I would have voted for it!

Tom Goodman,
Yeppers Christopher, got it right, this would have won for sure. I’d have cast my first place vote for it too! Congratulations on an excellent design. I think that is what primarily piqued my interest. The mix of woods looks great as well. Yeppers, it surely could have been a winner!

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis
