This is the first of three of these that I have made. The frame is solid walnut, the actual board was a veneered door that had been damaged. I kept the veneered top and reglued it to a piece of 1/2 oak veneer cabinet wood that I had. I traced the U.S. Outline with carbon paper and then burned it into the wood with my wood burner. I used a forstner bit for the quarter circles and then glued them in with a small bit of epoxy. After I made this one, both my married daughters liked it so well that I made one for each complete with all the quarters. I think it will get passed down for future generations.
The second is picture of my co-worker, Mark with this first one as I drew his name for Christmas. Everyone always hopes I draw their name cause they know they will be something unique from me made in my shop.

What type of map did you use, a US road map fold up type seems larger than your project.
