Sleigh bed crib

Project by wayned posted 97 days ago 337 views 0 times favorited 7 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This was an interesting project for me. I built this sleigh bed crib of solid cherry. It was a real delight to work with that wood. Cherry is beautiful wood and really machines well. I started out with a general idea of what I wanted the finished product to look like, then drew a sketch with rough measurements and modified that to fit the bed hardware I bought from Rockler.
The vertical slats are all mortise and tenon joints, and that was a real challenge since those for the front and the back of the crib had to fit the curved rails. No two of them were exactly the same. Cutting them was not a problem, but fitting all of them up during glue-up was.
Another challenge was building the curved piece on each end. I experimented with several methods, but finally ripped the pieces lengthways (running front to back on the crib) on my bandwaw and built basically a wooden pipe for each end. That allowed me to have the grain continue completely around the pieces.
All in all I really enjoyed this project. You can see from the second photo that the cat enjoyed it, too.

Great looking sleigh bed. Hope you had as much fun making your sleigh bed as I did with mine.
