To surprise someone special I decided to try to make a ring box like Peter Lloyd did here: http://www.finehardwoodboxes.com/box-gallery/ring-boxes
Obviously this was just for private use, not for commercial stuff. I really like his design and the thought he puts into his boxes. Making boxes from reclaimed wood from Lord Nelson’s ship, that’s just awesome.
So, I reclaimed some wood myself. From a recent holiday I decided to take a log of birch that was meant to be incinerated and then thought it would be nice to make a ring box out of it. I don’t have a router, so it was a bit tricky to get everything nice and square, but the result was ok. I lined it with gray felt, I’m not sure that color worked best, perhaps something darker would be more suitable.
As you can see in the “before” pics, the log took some special care with the hand saw and planes before I could salvage some decent parts (i..e without too much knots or black spots).
The lid closes with a rare earth magnet, again inspired by Peter Lloyd’s design, so all credits go to him. Go take a look at his website, he makes some amazing stuff.
Thanks for reading.
