I think it’s a Sapele votive candle holder anyway, this was in the ‘exotic scrap’ bin at the woodsmith store. It’s that time of year again, I have been trying switch from a need to buy list to a need to make list. The amount I need to still get done before Christmas is a bit daunting, however it is a lot easier to get the wife to let me down in the shop with the Christmas deadline.

I started out just carving the sapele, playing with where the grain seemed to want me to dive a bit deeper in. Originally I was going to put the frame directly on the edge, but playing around with it a bit I thought I could add a bit more interest floating it inside with a few pieces of walnut dowel. I didn’t really know I was making a candle holder at this point, but I saw some pieces of applewood branches I had been cutting up for another project, about the right size for a votive. I knew the end grain was going to absolutely suck up the varnish so I brushed on a heavy coat to let dry. Put those on some dowels to continue the theme and this is what you get!

Enjoy!

Pretty cool.

Hey, I got a PM about this and those votives do have clear holders around them! Definitely be safe and don’t set the candles directly on the wood.

Pretty cool.
