Project Information

This is a box that I made for my daughter to take to college to store small keepsakes in. It's made of Padauk and Birdseye Maple. I finished the project with two coats of Danish oil and two coats of wipe on poly. The "ribs" are about 1/8" proud of the surface, the top one makes a good catch for opening the lid. I used the maple as an accent for added contrast like an old Cris Craft boat. I purchased the lock set from Woodcraft.
The overall dimensions are about 15"x10"x6 1/2".

Brian,

I really like the look of the raised ribs around the box. It also gives a little added insurance if the box gets bounced around a little. How hard was the lockset to mortise? I have yet to try this style, but I am sure that it will come up sooner or later…

Sweet box. I love the colors. How long did you wait after applying the danish oil before applying the poly? I was under the impression that it wasn't a good idea to apply poly over danish oil and that you should only use wax after that. I'd love for that not to be true cause I love the ease of danish oil and the protection of poly.
Oh ya, what color of danish oil did you use?

Very nice. I really like those ribs, and matching the top is a good idea.

Are the ribs inlaid or a laminate glue up? I really like the look.

Rick - you can put poly over danish oil, but you have to wait AT LEAST 72 hours before applying the poly. I usually wait 4 days.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Derrek, the lock set was easy to install, I just traced the face plates with a knife then drilled out mortises and finished them up with a chisel, it probably didn't take more than an hour or so.

Rick, PGreene is right, I wait 3 or four days for the Danish oil to fully dry then just wipe on the poly. I love this finish because it's so simple. I used standard Danish oil, no pigment.

PGreene, the ribs are inlaid, I used a thin kerf blade in my table saw and planed the ribs to fit.
