This is the first box I have made on the lathe. Had a lot of fun doing this. Had to learn a new trick also. Without haveing a chuck to hold the lid or box, I made a ”Jam Chuck” to be able to turn both sides/bottoms.
This was a very challenging turning for me. I really enjoyed doing it.
The body of the box is 3 1/4×1 3/4 tall. Finial is 2 1/4 tall. Overall 3 1/4×4 1/4.
Woods are : Box is Zebrawood, Lid is Bloodwood, And Finial I think is Bocote. All are from the cut off bin at Woodworkers Source.
Only have one coat of Tung Oil/Varnish at this time. (sorry couldn’t wait to post)haha Will be putting several more on tommorow.
Please leave all comments and sugestions. Thank You for looking. Hope you enjoy.

Looks awesome man! Beautiful wood choice for contrast. What did you do for a sanding process? what a good finish choice! Thanks for sharing this one! Looking at your other work and I am greatly impressed!
God Bless,

Nice looking box Scrappy. You may consider turning the base off. If you continue the beautiful curve on your form through the base, your piece will look more graceful. When you tuck under the base, it will give your piece lift.
I look forward to seeing your next.

Very nice box. I congratulate you on both the box but in mastering the “Jam Chuck”. I must admit I have never had much success along those lines.

The bocote that I have has a more yellowish (like pine) color to it. I’m thinking that it might be Goncalo Alves.
Goncalo has a oilyish feel to the wood. I call it the wood that doesn’t need any finish. It self finishes.
Great looking piece. Nice job.

Thank you for all the great comments everyone. This was a very fun project. And a big challenge.
Dale, Sorry forgot to post that. Sanded to 400 grit Added the tung oil/varnish and sanded again when still wet. Helps to raise the grain and fill the pores in the wood. Re wet with to/v and burnished with the shavings. After all dry put on a single coat of to.v and let dry. Still need to do at least 2 more coats with sanding with 0000 steel wool between coats.
Dan, When I photo my pieces I put them on the dining room table with all the lights on. Do not use flash. It is setting on my drawing pad. I open to a blank page and use part for the background and part for the bottom. Seems to work prety good.
Trifern, Thank you for the idea. I was thinking it was out of “balance” but could not figure what it was. The wife likes this just as it is, so will try the different shape on the next one.
taidsturning, The “jam chuck” turned out prety well. It was a little scary to use at first. Kept expecting it to fly off at me like the first time I tried it. ( footed cup) The wall was so thin that I did not make the Jam Chuck snug enough. ( was afraid of cracking the wall ). Will be trying this tecnique again.
Karson, Thank you, I was not sure and the pics at “the hobbit house” vary a lot in color. This is slightly oily, I beleive you are correct and it is Goncalo Alves.
Thank again everyone.
