Linda and Allan Bennett farm outside of Adrian, Oregon. They called and made an appointment to discuss what they wanted. I couldn’t believe it when all they wanted were slab doors and drawer fronts. They wanted Alder but Alan liked knots and Linda didn’t!! So I compromised; some knots and some clear. Linda selected a nice classical edge treatment and browned hardware. the stain is Benwood Cherry. They took home a small three legged candle stand to check the color and then bought it.
When I got to their house, I found a 32 year old Boise-Cascade prefab with cabinets of print covered particle board. Strangley, the cabinets were in excellent shape, a tribute to Linda’s house keeping abilities. I guess they just wanted good quality cabinets. There are only 5 drawers in the kitchen but we put in 4 lazy susans.
I use 3/4 popular plywood for my cases and 1/2 inch Baltic birch for the backs. I pocket screw all face frames and then pocket screw them on to the cabinets. I use a seperate base which is leveled on to the floor. You can’t see the drawers in these views but they are 5/8 maple dovetailed on four corners. I use 1/2 Baltic for the drawer bottoms and Accuride Eclipse slides. the counter top is 1 1/4 inch industrial grade particle board with Formica laminate. We did the counter top as three pieces. With the cross corner cabinets I now have a large stock of left over laminate. The finish is Poly. Alan and his sons torn out the old cabinets. My son-in-law and I installed the kitchen in three days. I went back on the fourth day and did the matching trim in the dining room.
