this webpage shows more activity/results, but has not been completed: http://www.woodworkinghistory.com/resawing_BLM_burl.htm

i glued the veneer sheets to a torsion-box base. since this is my first project with book-matched veneer sheets, most of all i wanted the project to be a success, and to achieve a “success” i opted for gluing the sheets to a torsion box made of 3/8” mdf, something that guaranteed a flat surface.

(while it complicated the project, the experience with the torsion box was easier than i thought it would be, and am now a believer.)

I agree with Purplev’s comment on the previous “project” you posted. These should absolutely not be posted as projects. Please take the time to look through the other options available on this website.

If you need help just holler. I personally would love to see this as a process blog. Looks like some beautifull burl.

Looks good! Do you have a source for the Vacuum bags? I’ve had an interest in this for awhile and even aquired a pump but not sure where or how to go from here.

Thanks,
Paul

hi paul, sorry that i didn’t look at your question about vacuum bags until this morning. quality vakuum is where i bought my stuff, and haven’t regretted it. get the 30 mil bag for sure, and as large as you can afford. mine is 4’ x 8’, which means that it can accommodate torsion boxes. the owner, ed [last name escapes me] is very helpful on the ph.

other vacuum bag distributors are equally good, i think. i bought on bookfinder.com a used copy of david shath square’s “the veneering book” and find it useful, even if it is a 1995 imprint

veneering has changed my worldview woodworking. suddenly so-called scrap wood takes on an entirely different role. with the BS, slice old wood up —with nice figuring of course—and glue it to a substrate like mdf (with a corresponding back veneer, for prevention of warping) and you’ve got some very interesting wood with grain patterns to work with

when you buy a sheet of mdf, ask that it be cut in half for transporting—i buy at windsor plywood here in bellingham—not sure where la center is in the state, but am sure you can get the same deal
