Segmented Bowl -- Scaling the Learning Curve

I actually made this bowl last spring, before I discovered LumberJocks. I’m adding it now so that my LBJ gallery will be complete.

This was wood turning project #3 for me, and my first real attempt to make a design ring. On my previous project, I made separate rings composed of contrasting woods, and then stacked the rings in an attempt to make a pattern in the bowl. The problem with that was, if the rings weren’t perfect, neither was the design.

This time I glued together the contrasting woods and then cut from them the ring segments. Much better I think, and opened up additional possibilities to me for making more complex designs.

Thus this bowl was the genesis of my next project (#4), which better captured the potential of this approach.

Can’t wait to see how my next project (#6) turns out. Just starting that one now.

Good looking. There are so many ways to make rings. I always look for different ways. Thanks for sharing.

Brent, that is really good. I agree that segmenting gets to be very addictive, and lots of fun.
Great job and thanks for sharing.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.
