The client wanted a desk surface without conventional corners. One that would wrap around him while seated.
The result is this Kidney bean shaped desk with drawer banks on both sides of the knee space.
The scalloped mahogany planks, which stand vertically as they wrap around the soft radius of the desk, also adorn the end panels of the more rectilinear credenza.

WOW! Very unique and beautiful. I like the bend in the metal legs too, they match nicely. Quite an impressive design. The shop photos really help show how much work went into this. How many hours did it take to create?

Hi Matthew,
There are many descriptive words for your work, the only one I can think of is “inspirational”. Nobody would or could “critique” such artful pieces. Astounding.

That is sheer awesomeness. If Optimus Prime were from another planet, one where the inhabitants were cellulose based, he would transform into the credenza. Btw, how did you scallop the boards? They look the radius of a table saw blade to me.

Absolutely beautiful desk… very impressive design and craftsmanship. Are the peaks of all the coves capped with something like ebony?
Ladiesman, I know you can achieve those cuts on the table saw, but I’m interested to know if that’s how it was done on these pieces as well.

Thanks for the nice words from so many new faces.
I’m new to LJ and I’m enjoying becoming familiar with all of the interesting work out there. Inspiring.
To Ladiesman217, & to Kevin83 ?s- You might say I cheated…I had some rather large crown leftover from our library job. I trimmed down both edges of the symmetrical profile using a slight bevel (to correspond with the bow front facade ). When the cove pieces butted next to one another on the radiused form there was a small saddle created between them ( square cove ) where I placed a 3/8” ebonized dowel.
I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Thanks,
Matthew

Thanks “planesmoooth” & Jim…
Many years ago, when I was beginning my career as a woodworker, a man who worked for a large furniture company in their finishing department said something to me that stuck. He said…”the finish is the last thing to go on a piece of furniture, but it’s the first thing you see.” He’s right of course. I’ve always found the last step is the hardest to “nail” for the look you’re after. The same finish doesn’t really fit all pieces.

Very nice desk. I wish I had some left over wood like that!! Last time I purchased some mahogany it cost me a fortune. Any chance of editing your post to get a look of the finished product from the other side?
You already have 8 “favorites”; really good going. It might not make you so proud because you are a pro but I was really proud when I got two on the first project I posted (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/16248) and I haven’t seen another since!! I guess I’ll have to get more creative like you have done. Nice job.

Thanks Lloyd,
The mahogany did cost a fortune but, as you know, it always delivers. I don’t have the desk any longer and unfortunately I don’t have (to my knowledge) any good pictures of the seated side. We eliminated the pencil drawer (the client is tall) in the middle but had a bank of drawers (one file and 2 box) on each side. Although the desk top edge is concave where you sit, the axis line of the drawer travel remained parallel so as not to “pinch you” when opening the drawers.
Thanks for the compliments, and yes the welcome from LJs’ has been quite a pleasant surprise.
Seeing the fine work of so many of LJs’ members is truly inspiring for anyone and everyone who appreciates woodwork. Let’s keep making sawdust!

Mr. Scotsman ( Alistair ), you are kind sir. Thank-you.
Like so many other LJ folks I got hooked when I first began to work with wood as a, shall we say, younger lad ( for I too am over 50 now :-). Wood seemed like a great medium for someone to explore design without necessarily having a client (as opposed to being an architect for instance ). Designing, in many ways, is like engineering little puzzles. That’s what I love about it.
BTW-As to wether I will “make a mark on woodworking in the future”... I’ve been chasing the “mark” for nearly 30 years and hopefully can chase the rascal another 30. I’m also still chasing making money at what I love doing. It’s been and, with this economy, remains a roller coaster. But, I still love it and feel lucky to be doing it.
Good luck to you.
