what a challange

Project by aldente posted 101 days ago 364 views 1 time favorited 14 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Had a co-worker give me a log. He found it along the road. After cutting it up and doing some research, it turns out to be spalted japanese maple. Boy was this stuff a challange !! It dries out fast. And with that comes the major checking. It’s 5-5/8 by 4-1/2 wide at the top. This was just one of the branches on the log.

That’s some beautiful looking wood! Who-da thunk you’d find that on the side of the road?

Wonderful piece of work but one of your problems with drying and checking is that you turned across the grain with the core of the log in the middle of your work. It is very difficult not to get checking under those conditions and you may continue to have a problem with the core checking as the piece ages. It sure made a pretty design though (-;

Nice wood no matter what you do with it. I’m guessing it’ll never hold fresh flowers, so no worries about filling it with water, so if it checks just enjoy watching nature do it’s thing.

Rodd, this is a gorgeous vase. This piece of firewood certainly “turned” out nice. Posts like this make me regret not having a lathe in my shop. It sure looks like you are having fun.

Glad to see you are getting more shop time in as well.

Wow I really love this piece, I want a lathe so bad I’m ready to kill for one, maybe someday I’ll be able to get one. What kind do you have? Or what name brand would you suggest? Keep in mine I have no income other than what I hussel up, Partially dissabled but not according to S.S.I. So budget is a biggie. Any help from you or any other LJ. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for sharing Beautiful work, Keep them coming.
