I made this for a friends birthday a little bit ago. She is away from home and didn’t have any family or friends to spend the day with, so I thought she’d appreciate it. Before shipping I loaded it up with pictures of her friends and family.
This piece is based largely off something I saw in WoodSmith a while back, but I tweaked a few things along the way to make it a little more awesome :) This is primarily made of curly maple with purpleheart accents – I’ve always found that to be a striking combination. In all, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Getting the doors aligned just right was a PIA, the right one is still just a tick off, but I was up against a deadline and didn’t have time to play with it anymore.
I finished the piece in some Tung Oil with UV protection.

It’s too bad you didn’t have more time to get the details worked out. Luckily since it’s a picture frame it will be open most of the time, and no one will notice. Practice makes perfect. Nice job.
