A while back I got bit by the wooden plane bug. Took a while to get over it. I’ve been hooked on turning for the last 2 months as I finally invested in a lathe. Here are the two of my first three keepers. I have a walnut one with the same kit at work at the moment. I did these two today. One is cocobolo and the other I believe is Osage. I bought a cut off bundle, not positive of the orangish one. Cocobolo’s pretty easy to ID though.
They are both 7mm Slimline kits. I’m limited to the 7mm kits until I pick up some more bushings and bits. I like the kits even though I don’t particuarly care for twist pens vs. click pens. Cheap kits and good practice for the nicer ones.
As I said, these were the keepers. I turned one to the barrel on accident. Another had very mismatched grain and while turned well, looked terrible.
More to come. . .

addicting is an understatement….I took a Woodcraft class last fall and I have not looked back…
what I like about it is the ability to start and finish a project in a short time…and people sure like the gifts!!!
Your pens look great!!! I agree the lighter pen looks like Orange Osage…
Enjoy!

Welcome, you are now one of us, the Brotherhood of Pen Turners. A great click pen if you’re interested is an 8 MM from Woodcraft. But I really like the slimlines, you can do a lot with them. Check out http://www.woodturningonline.com/ in there “projects” section, among all the other neat projects, there’s a great Pens section with a few great slimline projects.

Jeff, these look good and I am sure there will be more to come. It won’t be long until you are venturing into vases and bowls as well!!
What type of finish did you put on these pens?

Great pens. As a fellow addict, I can tell you with some certainty that you’re in trouble. Be prepared to rationalize spending “a bit more than you planned” on some high end pen kits, get really picky about your finishing habits, finish and refinish pens several times just because of fingerprints, and start to dream about new skew chisel techniques in your sleep.
I’m a fan of Woodturningz. The sell the entire PennState catalog, usually at a good discount with fast and cheap shipping.
Good luck and happy turning!

I have weaned myself off pens and moved on to bowls and vessels…..I think someone on LJ said it best when they called turning the crack of woodworking…..maybe there will be a 12 step group available for folks with this infliction? Good luck with your turning….Those are definitely keepers….very nice..

Scott, the finish is something else I’ll change eventually. I expiremented with several and honestly can’t remember what was used for these two. I know I gave BLO, poly, shellac, and cheap paste wax. I’m told the high friction polishes such as Shellwax and it’s clones are the way to go. Normally not a high gloss guy, buy pens and such look much better with a high gloss.
