Hey Lumberjocks!
This is my latest creation. A cherry chest with ebony inlay, ebony plugs and cedar bottom. Solid cherry panels.
Thanks for looking!

That’s very nice! I’m just hoping my wife doesn’t see this. She recently hinted to me that we need one of these.

Thanks everyone. This was a first for me with the ebony. That is some expensive stuf, but worth it.

Hi Brian, I really like your blanket chest. The inlay really adds to the look of the piece.
I have a question for you or anyone; talk to me about the cathederals in the grain. The two outer panels they are pointing down, and the center they point up. Was that a design plan, did they just happen that way, did you do a dry fit and choose that layout, or something else? I’m mostly curious about how people choose to work with grain.
Thanks,
Topapilot

Topapilot,
The only panel I gave much thought to was the center panel. The panels are made from three boards and the two outside boards of the center panel are book matched. All of the panels were resawn with the intention of book matching, but it only came out looking good on the center panel (chosen to be center for this reason, none of the other panels are book matched). The grain in the boards I was using wasn’t interesting enough for book matching to be noticeable. For the center panel I wanted the outer dark streaks to start at the top and run down (it looks like it’s dripping). The other panels were just placed in with little thought to cathedral direction.
(obviously when book matching panels you need even numbered boards. I was originaly only interested in book matching the outer two boards of each panel)

Thanks Karson,
I was going to incorporate more G&G elements (stepped lower rail), but I wanted to keep it more original.
