Mobile I made for our very, very soon to be son #2.
It is made from walnut laminated around a maple core. Maple is from some old reclaimed elementary school gym floors.
I shaped it with a spokeshave, rasp, angle grider, and orbital sander.
Finish is Danish oil and furniture wax.
I used hemp cord to string it. Knots are inset tightly (I left tails so that they could one day be removed if needed). Hemp cord has virtually no flex and stores torsional energy well. Even just blowing on it causes it to spin for a minute or two, put forth some effort to spin it and it goes for quite a while.
The things hanging are little stuffed critters from Ikea. The beads add visual interest and balance the weight.
