Hormigo Negro handled Mallet

Project by David Schmaus posted 111 days ago 339 views 1 time favorited 5 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I was cutting my first dovetails yesterday on my half finished workbench using a scrap piece of walnut as a hammer and realized that it might be a good time to start and more importantly finish a project. So I went to woodcraft and bought a piece of Hormigo Negro (handle) and a piece of, as marked, Wood1. Not sure what the body is but looked good and had less than 6 bucks for both.

I planed the handle to 1 1/4×3/4 and the body is about 5 1/2 long and allmost 3 inches square. I have very few tools so I used my Jet mortiser for the hole for the handle. To shape the handle I used my bench grinder to create the basic shape then my ROS to fine tune it.. I was going to sand the tenon flush but kind of like it proud.. Anyway. I project started and FINISHED!!!

Cool.

The end grain in the handle looks a lot darker than the rest of the handle.

I like it. Good for you to finish something for yourself.

The wood choice looks great. That Number1 is really striking.
