Large chip carving

Project by Roger Strautman posted 109 days ago 718 views 7 times favorited 38 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I’m a chip carver and enjoy making things out of wood then decorating them with chip carving. This is a wall hanging that is 24” sq. and has 4 triangles hinged on it. When this is opened it becomes a 36” diamond. The dark wood framing is walnut and the light colored wood is basswood. I made this for the competition at the largest woodcarving show in the country, ’’Dayton Artistery in Wood” I can get closer pictures if anyone would like. Thanks for looking!

Roger, as always I am humbled. Your vision to produce the design in the first place is amazing. And then, as always your execution, your skill, your patience and your attention to details are truly unmatched.

And yes I would greatly like to see closer pictures.

If there is any justice in this world your carving will win first place in the Dayton show.

Well, all I can say is thank you to everyone for thinking that I’ve hit a home run with this one. This piece was definitely the toughest of all that I have done to date. A lot was going on in many areas. The walnut frames gave me design fits, I wanted to look at those areas as separate pieces and they had to be seen as a whole instead.

Photobucket

There are textured areas in the pinwheel design which helps with contrast.

Thanks again everyone!

SPECTACULAR!!!! I too love chip carving and incorporating it into useful pieces rather than into a standard practice board. I am interested into the “double” chip or the chip inside a chip. I had some one show me one time and I can’t remeber how it was done. Can you help a fellow chipper out.

Roger, can you also explain how you did the angled cut on the centre of the 4 quadrants? I’ve given up on trying to figure out your method of construction.

cheers

Ms Debbie, I really am not sure where it will go but if it’s like the others probably behind my studio door. LOL!

AllorNoThumbs, it’s not all that hard. Make two vertical stabs with the deepest part at the point then make a tapered cut down to that depth. Now do those all over again inside that chip area.

Colin, after I had the triangles all mounted I laid out the size circle I wanted then cut each triangle separate on my scroll saw with the table set at an angle. After all have been cut I veneered the cuts.

Awesome! Roger!

I don’t think there’s anyone in the world that can stand up against your amazing talent.

Just the design alone on a piece of paper could take a prize.

Thank you Dick!

Keep in mind my goal was to win Best of Show at Dayton so I knew it had to be unique. You won’t believe this but when I started this I had one design in mind. See it in the middle of the book cover?

Photobucket

After that I had the idea of making this appear to be small with a beautiful design then when opened for it to hit the judges like a ton of bricks with my designs. All of the designs were shoot from the hip except for the middle of the 24”. This piece by far was my most difficult todate, design and cuts.

You have to have the patience of “Job” to do a piece of work like this.

I have patience too, but I don’t know if could ever handle a project like this.

I forgot to mention, Good Luck in the competition.

Even though I know you’ll blow them all away.

You can chip carve on most any kind of wood but the harder the wood the more likely you are to have to use chisels instead of a knife.
