This was a custom birdhouse built in 2008, which was a replica of the house that my client had built for him in Virginia. It features three bird nesting cavities (unfinished), removable clean out panels, copper lined entry holes (sized for sparrows, wrens or chickadees), drainage and ventilation areas. The complicated roof lines give this house a lot of character, but they were also a challenge to duplicate. The details of the birdhouse were burned, carved and painted on, and the birdhouse is painted with an exterior grade paint and sealed with a marine grade non-yellowing urethane. I typically build my birdhouses out of eastern white pine that I mill to 3/8” thickness in my shop. I’ve also used red cedar on a few birdhouses, but found that the eastern pine doesn’t move as much.
