A silent and live auction has been held for the past ten years as a local fund raiser for scholarships for a small college. As part of the fund raiser and to help get a young man from our church some hands on experience in working with wood we created a decorating contest for bird houses. Derek and I built two models of the bird houses and then solicited involvement from 13 people to decorate them. We gave a choice of the shape of the house. If the artist was going to paint the houses then we applied some Kilz to help cover the knots and sap and give a uniform surface. Working over four evenings we were able to cut the materials, assemble and paint the houses. We had allowed 3 weeks for the artists to do their thing.
We had 12 of 13 houses completed in time for the voting and silent action. Voting was done by giving each person that registered for the event a marble to cast their votes into the coffee cans that can be seen in some of the photos.
The creativity of the artists was really exciting! As you can see from the photos everyone had a different ideas.
Snoopy took 1st in the popular vote.
The Green Holiday House was 2nd.
Twelve Birds on the House was 3rd.
Lil’ Kitty capture the younger demographic for 4th.
The rustic cabin that was burnt was the favorite amongst the wood workers in the crowd. She burnt all the surfaces!
This one was done with graphics and the materials used to skin cover cars.
This one was painted free hand (maybe with ruled line – I can’t hardly cut a straight line….)
And the rest…
We need a different contest idea for next year. Something that can be decorated uniquely by several people. If you have any ideas please leave a comment.
