Hickory Dining room set

Dining room set I built (almost) entirely by hand. The wood is Kentucky Hickory, solid wood construction throughout. The entire construction of the chairs and bench is hand cut mortise and tenon joinery. The chairs have a solid 2 1/8” set, hand carved as well. The top of the table was entirely hand scraped and smoothed. Yes, it is very heavy, but also very comfortable.
The picture of the wood shavings is a couple hours of hand planing the seats BEFORE starting to carve. You guys know what I’m talking about.
It is finished off with several coats of Behlen Rock Hard table top varnish, and man, it is extremely durable. (My three kids have out it to the test).
Thanks for looking, best regards!

Very nice write up for some really nice craftsmanship!
I’ve used Behlen products but never their Behlen Rock Hard table top varnish.
Did you use Behlen sanding sealer for the first step? Just curious….
Thanks for sharing you excellent work.

Wonderful set. I’m extra impressed it was done by hand. How much time did you spend at the sharpening station during the build?

Thanks for the comments. I didn’t use any sanding sealer on the hickory. What I did do was use several spray coats starting with a full strength finish going down to a thin mix to get a nice smooth finish. The Behlen finishes are very durable and well made.

I think I sharpened about 4 times, just honing… don’t want to ruin a good edge!
