I built this custom birdhouse for a client that was an “empty nester” and wanted to take her house with her when she moved. It’s fully functional with drainage, ventilation and easy to remove clean out areas, and was finished in a non-yellowing marine grade urethane finish. The nesting chambers are unfinished, with 1/14” copper line entry holes. The detail was carved, burned and painted.

Beautiful.Do you use full size machinery to make these or do you have miniature equipment?I am considering building some scale boats but am a little hesitant to cut 1/8” thick by 3/8” wide material on my tablesaw I know there are model makers saws out there so I am trying to find someone who uses one to get thier opinion of thier saw.

oh how special!
it’s in the plans to make a birdhouse version of our house. Don’t think it will be as impressive as this, though. All the details—impressive.

To Hacksaw – I use full size machinery and typically mill 3/8” thick eastern pine as stock. A table saw would certainly “swallow” material the size you are looking for. I don’t have any experience with model making saws, but can highly recommend a source for pre-cut model making stock lumber.
Northeaster Scale Lumber http://www.northeasternscalelumber.com/ has a great selection of just about anything you would need for a project (stock, trim, kits, etc). Most of their catalog is online. They are also very helpful and responsive, and would probably be a good resource for your questions about milling this small stock.
Best of luck, and please let me know how everything turns out.

To MsDebbieP – Thank you for your kind words. Here’s a link to an article about building a replica birdhouse http://blog.newenglandbirdhouse.com/?p=526. It covers a lot of basic things to consider like planning and making the birdhouse safe for the occupants. I would love to see pics and updates of your project.
