One of my woodworking club members came by the shop tonight to visit and have me show him how to make a pen. We spent an enjoyable evening while we worked through the selection, design, and production stages of pen-making.
Tonight, I did the actual production; next time Norm makes the pen while I offer advice and tips if necessary.
This is what got made:

Chrome slimline dressed in segmented curly, lightly bird’s eyed hard maple with black walnut accents.
Finished with a skew, followed by CA, walnut oil & CA, MM 1500 thru 12000, and buffed out with plastic polish.
The main question is: What kinda lathe will he end up getting?
:D ;)

Looks great Gary. I’ve not tried any segmenting. You will have to post some info on how to do it.

Segmented turning of all sorts is something I’d like to take a run at. Nice pen!

Thanks all.
Darryl—yes, you do!
Wayne,
It’s basically cutting at 45-degrees, gluing contrasting slice(s) of wood in place, drilling, and turning.
Do you ever visit IAP or TPS ?
Those are two sites devoted to pen-making and there are numerous tutorials on segmentation to be
had there. I couldn’t write a better one than some already available. At IAP, look in the library. At TPS, many are linked directly on the home page.
IF you can’t find what you want, send me a reply and I’ll find the direct link.
