This is my first turned bottle stopper for display. It is a USAF pin cast in clear Polyester Resin with a sky blue base. I just received my bottle stopper mandrel from PSI, and the actual stopper is 316 stainless steel.

That looks amazing-could you show a better pic of the top. I do not do anything like this so please forgive what is probably a dumb question, but how do you go about making the cast. Did you buy a blank, then glue the pin assembly on to the blank and then turn??? Just wondering. Keep up the great work.

I purchased this blank for $1, too good of a deal to pass up. It is a second, so that is why I did not show a head on picture. Some of the plating had lifted off the edge of the blank. You can see part of it at the very top of the blank in the picture. It’s not super noticable, but it was my first time turning a bottle stopper and I didnt’ want to waste expensive resin.

But I have cast these before. The bottom part is mixed with pigments and then allowed to gel to the point where it is tacky. Then you place the pin or whatever object it is you want to show, and the tacky resin holds it in place while you pour the remainder of the resin without any pigments at all. Simlar 41 casting resin from US composites is what I usually use. It is a real paint to get it perfect, sometimes the objects move, or you get bubbles, which is the bane of my existence.
