My friend is doing her Christmas shopping early. She wanted keepsake music boxes for the granddaughters.
I made four identical boxes out of bloodwood (keeps the red color better than most red woods). Music works came from Klockit , (all Amazing Grace) but I had to modify them a little. Drilled a hole in the plastic cover for the stop pin and tapped the mounting holes to accept a 6/32 screw rather than the metric provided. Used nice brass surface mount hinges that I reshaped to fit the top. Yes, I checked out the $30.00 a pair hinges for small boxes and decided against them. Used my old standby finish Deft.

Those are beautiful!
Just curious…what do you charge for something like this?

Great looking boxes. I’m sure your friend is very pleased as well. I would be.

making one small box can bea cahllenge to do well, but making 4 identical ones is even harder. These are very nice and I like the chioce of songs.

To jhawkinnc—That’s a very interesting question. I’ll run it down for you. There is about $35 worth of materials in each box. I don’t even try to keep track of the hours because there are many. So one has to negotiate a price. My friend and I ageed on $100 a box. I hope that answers your question. bob

Nicely done… beautiful wood. I did my first box and discovered the cost of those $30 hinges and I went with simple hardware store set. Same way with a chain for lid… can’t find a really good one. Idle Curiosity… tough to make four identical… did you do these one at a time or “mass” produce by setting saw stops for uniform pieces in 4 sets?

To dustyal—Thanks for asking, I cut all the parts from the same settings, cut the rabbet joints with my new Dado King dado set from Forrest (used a router in the past). The bottom is 1/2 inch baltic birch plywood so I could mount the music works and the bottom is set loose in a 3/4 inch rabbet so it could be removed to put in the velvet lining. The only drawback with using the blood wood is the dust. Everything turns red ie. the tools the floor, me, the dog, everything.

They do look remarkable. Just gorgeous, if you charged $100.00 dollars a box, you did them a big favor.
