Project Information

I should have given more information the first time I put the pictures up, but it was late and I just slapped them up.
My next-door nbeighbor is a wine buyer for a major grocery chain. His house, like mine, has a daylight basement (about 800 sq ft) that was not finished when we bought our houses. When he decided to finish his basement he had someone cut through the concrete retaining wall that runs the width of the house, as shown in the sketchup drawing. He dug out the dirt and put in a floor and walls to crerate his wine cellar. The environment is perfect.
Because he wasn't very clear about how big the hole should be…he had to have a custom door.
It was an interesting project, because of the 10" depth of the door opening. It made for a very impressive entry.
All red oak. Six week-ends of work done as a favor…!
BTW…I've never charged anyone for anything. They may pay for materials and supplies, but nothing else. I've done dozens of projects under this rule. You see: I already have a job. This is my HOBBY.

Man, that's what I call a GOOD friend!! I agree, you should have charged for this wonderful door! But, sometimes barter works out very well and I hope that your friend can return the favor in some manner.

I love the grate and the peek door. With the whole thing being red oak, it definitely took some time and effort to produce. Great job!

Great looking door…VERY impressive. Maybe since you spent SIX weeks of your time on it…your friend will give you a key to the "Wine Cellar"....sounds like a fair trade to me !!!!

Nice door, since you did the work for free I believe a key to the wine cellar would be in order.

Not sure who I would prefer as my neighbour. I mean you made the door, and it is a great door. But your neighbour has the wine.
Should be more of it, the gift is in the giving.

Hi everyone, and thanks to all who welcomed me to the group. I just joined yesterday and I have mixed feelings, one hand I was totaly amazed at the talent you all have, I spent the whole day in disbelieve with the quality of work most of you have. You are truely artist, and don't let anybody tell you different. Art is something that you create and others admire, Like this door for instance,,,all I can say is wow, Wish you was my neighbor L.O.L. I got a whole house to do. Although I am having a blast looking at the work you all do {the wife is ready to shoot me, thats all I did yesterday}I am ready to sell all my tools and hang my head in same. I use to think I did some good quality work before but now you make all my work look like,,, well you get the idea, Man once again great job you should feel proud, not only with the door but the kindness you showed your neihbor. We all need more neighbors like you. Keep it up. GaryBuck

I added history to the posting, and a sketch-up.
Thanks for all the compliments.
--I know its odd that I built a wine rack and a wine-cellar door, but I don't drink wine.
Beer, even my favorite microbrew IPAs, Porters, ESBs,...don't need a rck or a cellar.

The the sketchup makes more sense. I was wondering why the handrail is going down:) Your policy is probably the best. Everytime you give someone a "good" deal they still think they got screwed. If they are good enough to do a favor and materials only, so be it; otherwise full bore.
