Wall hung shelves

Project by Don Kondra posted 122 days ago 664 views 11 times favorited 9 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is a fun project I do on a limited production basis and sell through a gallery.

The shelves are BC curly maple, the support is Saskatchewan birch finished with black gesso. The shelves are oiled and all parts are clear lacquered.

The completed unit hangs off two screws (installed in the wall) which fit into keyhole slots.

Before cutting the tapers on the support piece, I dado a 3/4” x 3/4” groove in the back to accept a mounting piece. Once the support is cut apart, it is reassembled by screwing through the 3/4” x 3/4” mounting piece.

The shelves taper in length and width and have a notch cut out to fit the mounting piece.

This piece is from the first batch of six, on the next run the keyhole slot is cut on both sides of the entry hole, this way the client can decide if they want to mount the unit with the tapering shelves up or down….

Cheers, Don

Don, Really like your design on this, and a great contrast with the wood and finishes. Job well done.

Very nice looking, I should ask you to check out a granite corner shelf unit I made and posted in my projects that I did a few years ago. Made entirely of granite, the shelves are suspended out and held only by the back in the corner, I think it’s on page 2 of my projects. I love the look of your piece, wood is beautiful.

Dan, looked at your granite shelf. Don’t you just love to prove people wrong :)

Cheers, Don
