A couple of weeks ago, my Godfather gave me a call to ask if I would send him another pen. I had given him a Sierra pen the last time I was home and apparently he has fallen in love with the size of the pen (my godfather is not a small man). This weekend I went down to Lee Valley and bought the upgraded Sierra pen kit. Strangely when I got back to the shop, I found this wood cutoff that I had already drilled a hole in. The brass tube fit in the hole perfectly.
Now that I have captured a picture of it I can send off to Rhode Island.

PS – I wish I knew what the wood is but I ofter buy pen blanks in bulk and it’s rare that they identify what they send you.

I’d bet your paycheck it’s Arizona Desert Ironwood. When I was in Tucson for a week of teaching, I stopped at the local wood store and they sold it by the pound, mostly for knife scales, but if you take the time to polish it up, its simply amazing stuff. Careful with the dust from this stuff. It only grows in the Sonoran desert and doesn’t float. Was it heavy before you turned it? And very easy to work with? It looks like amboyna burl to me. Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful pen. Great job!
