Yes, another great bowl. How long was the class?

The first class I took from Stuart was a week long at Craft Supplies in Utah (http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com). The second was only 2 days and hosted by the Mid-Columbia Woodturners Association in Eastern Washington (http://www.mcwoodturners.org/).

Lboy, very interesting turning. Is it from one piece of wood, or is the bowl inserted into the cross piece?
By the way, your links don’t work because of the brackets. The simplest way to provide a link is to highlight the name of the link, ie Craft Supplies in Utah, then click on the link symbol above the comment box and paste the URL address into the dialog box that pops up. Here’s the result. Craft Supplies, Utah Mid-Columbia Woodturners Association in Eastern Washington Stuart Batty Hope that this helps.

I’ve always wanted to try one of those. Does the wood start out square, or do you saw the straight edges at the end? The thought of those four corners flying around sends shivers down my spine!
Really nice turnings.

Thanks Don, for correcting my links (I’m new at this).
Robert, the wood blank starts out as a rectangular block. The wing leaves a shadow, you do have to pay attention. When working on this one I didn’t and while sanding the wing cut the back of my hand, I had no idea until there was red on the floor from the blood dripping. I ended up putting tape on the tool rest so that I would have a visual reminder to not go past the line.

I know the feeling. I’ve dinged myself several times on my Cole jaws or natural-edged bowls. <chuckle> I’ll bet those four corners stir up quite a breeze!

Very interesting idea. Sounds like you need to really be careful of the spinning “plank.”

Awesome bowl Lboy! I have a couple of blanks set aside to try this type of turning. Your post may have provided me with the inspiration and vision needed to give it a try. Thank you for sharing.

so how thick was that blank before you started turning it and what are the dimensions now ? How thick is the “square” part of the project ?

Thanks for the nice comments.
The dimensions of the blank were as follows: Length – 7 in., Width – 5 3/8 in., and Depth – 3 1/4 in.
Finished dimensions are roughly the same, the wing is a little less than 1/8 in. thick. The bowl is 3 1/4 inches in diameter.
