This a a turned Mopane lidded box. The stone is a Madagascar Orbicular Jasper a.k.a Ocean Jasper.

Madagascar Orbicular Jasper is famous for its unpredictable color swirls and color patterns; particularly the many small spheres or “orbs” in its matrix, which appear as circles or eyes on cut sections. It is this dance of coloration, occasional druzy cavities, and a mixture of opaque and semi-translucent gemmy layers that attract the collectors to this popular chaledony gemstone.

It was a Christmas gift that, because of a few showings, was actually given about 2 months late.

Beautiful box. As an avid rock hound I love the combination of two of my favorite things i.e. wood and stone. Did you do he lapidary work?

Jim … I belong to a gem and mineral group out here in California. I enjoy the information, but probably not ever going to actually go out and dig for rocks. Stones like this I buy at the shows to incorporate into my pieces. I don’t need another hobby to throw money at. —- Don
