Dad's Walnut Tree

Project by webwood posted 129 days ago 654 views 0 times favorited 19 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This box was made from a walnut tree that I got from my dad. Had to drive about 500 miles to get there but we got it back and this was the result. His 70th birthday was a couple of months ago so I decided to make him a box from his tree. This is my first woodworking project (with a little help from erik – just making sure that I did not cut any fingers off) and yes we used the incra jig. Very cool tool – just need square wood. Made from the walnut and curly maple – still needs work on the finishing – so far just one coat of tung oil… but after looking at the pictures, I think I may have missed some glue – more sanding and finishing – I guess.

Nice job, Did you cut those double dovetails by hand?

That’s a great story! Your dad drove a great distance to get that tree to you, and you equally did a great job on the box! Did you say your dad just turned 70? How fortunate you are!! You just keep on making him gifts from your heart!! As many as you can, he won’t mind!!!

You did a great job. Your dad will love it and like Matt said keep on making him as many things as you can. He’ll appreciate it one, he knows they come from the heart.

Matt – Actually, we drove up to my dad to get the tree… pretty funny.. used our van and had to use a bobcat to get it into the van… it sat in the back for a couple of months, until we could find someone to mill it for us… let it sit to cure and now starting to use some of the smaller pieces… it is just beautiful wood…

Charlie – yes, erik is an outstanding teacher, very patient – I have always wanted to learn woodworking. Looking forward to creating some more beautiful things.

Christy: You have done yourself proud with the box. I’m sure that your father will cherish it forever.

I love the story that goes with it.

Beautiful job, outstanding first project. I think you will be happy with a few coats of tung oil. Your father will be proud.

-- Keith, Bolingbrook, Illinois. How did you do that? I just started with a bunch of wood and cut away anything that's not part of the finished piece...

That is beautiful. I’ve always been partial to Walnut, and the contrast you can have when you blend with a lighter wood. This is your first project? Appears you have a bright future.
