I built this pair of Night Stands in September 2011, but never got around to posting it here. I believe this was my first build using all solid wood construction. The tables were built out of poplar and stained to match the bed. I applied the same number of coats to the carcass as I did the drawer front, but the drawer came out darker. Overall the stain process was a pain in the butt and I don’t look forward to doing it again. The table legs are very thick (around 3 1/2”), this was done to match the proportions the king size bed. The tops are made out or 8/4 poplar. The bottom shelf is a 7/8” thick glued up panel made out of solid wood and joined to the legs using dowels. Wood movement has not been an issue (the table is still together).
These tables were in the making for 3+ years. This was the first solid wood project I attempted to build, before I new much about woodworking. I did’t have a power jointer or hand tool knowledge when I started the build. Also, I had to buy the materials twice because I screwed up the first time around. The original table top ended up being 5/8” thick, too thin for the monster legs. I kept the original top and now it’s the panel on the door of my Nail Cabinet (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/185434).
