Sculpture Model

Looks good! That’s all glued up ply at this point – right? How did you make the “O” part?

Also, where will this massive (at 9’) sculpture find it’s home? Outdoors or in?

The finished piece will reside outside the house in the driveway loop. This will place it across the driveway facing the door that inspired it.

The construction of the “O” consisted of kerf cut plywood and hot glue, lots of hot glue. I do have progress photos. I have limited time to get everything into the computer and then into the site.

I will work on my new found skills to get more to you.

Well MsDeb, believe it or not, all of my models have ended up being burned when finished with.

The only model that I still have is for a piece that has not been built yet. That piece is often seen in the background of various photos in the shop. It looks like a piece of doll furniture. I have lost the various tops of different profiles that go with it from moving from Ohio to MT.

I probably won’t burn that one, I will give it to the grandkids to play with. It is more refined and of a scale that can be dealt with. All my other models were rough like this current one and too big.

I made models for the chandeliers, the entertainment center, and the torri gate stands. All gone.

For the scupture.. no .. for any project I was having done, I would find it even more amazing to have the model displayed as well.. for me, it really adds to the wonder of the finished piece.

so, when I am a millionaire and can afford such a sculpture I will be sure to ask for the model as well :)

I think the full size version will look great. I’ll bet if you painted the model a flat black, or a metallic color it would look sharp, & someone would buy it .

The design is great Todd. I agree with Dick, paint it flat black or metallic & someone will definately buy it or it would look great inside the Cooper house.

The clients and I had a pretty good conversation tonight hashing out the medium for the final sculpture. The original idea was to do it in steel with a rusted finish or rusted with an acid. I had the idea of a rougher metal with fused glass in it. The clients also talked about copper or bronze. They also thought that a small version of wood for indoors might be good. I agreed. I think black walnut would be a good choice.

In the end I said that they should live around it for a while and see how it feels. Determine what they do or don’t like (they really like it overall) and we can make changes.

It is just a model but the shop photos don’t convey the balance and proportions very well. It really is neat to walk around it and see how it changes in front of you. There are several different ways you could express this piece and I have no doubt they would all look neat.

Just awesome Todd! I see it in two materials…part of their interaction. Black walnut lines in a red mahogany circle. Or steel and concrete.
Then again it is my nature to complicate things!

A great design Todd. I think you should add it to a T-shirt with your web site address. Or, maybe even use it as your logo for an artistic line. I can see people running around with your t-shirt design as part of the in crowd. Way to go!

You should check on Coreten Steel. It naturally rusts to a nice brown iron oxide.

The base of this Statue near my home is made of Coreten.

If you notice along the roads, the underground phone cable terminal boxes are made of Coreten.

The United States Steel headquarters in Pittsburgh is Coreten Steel.
