I or I should say my wife design the marquetry design and I did the work. I did design the overall look and the choice of woods in the marquetry. This is a cabinet to fit in our family room it needed to be shallow and fit in a space we had in mind. I use a foot powered scroll saw that I built as the tool for cutting out the design.

OUTSTANDING!! Did your wife draw her inspiration from a particular Calder work? I really like the lines of the cabinet. It feels like it’s inspired by the Pacific Arts & Crafts style and that is one of my favorite styles. I love the tones. I don’t know why but I think of ‘Danish Modern’ when I see furniture this color and finish By the way what is the finish?
The whimsy of the drawer handles was (in my mind) the courageous act of creativity. And they work. How many permutations did you go through before you finalized the design?
The more I look at it the more I like it. This piece could really grow on you.

Nice work on the cabinet and the saw. Does the saw have a spring return on it?

Wow more response than I thought! First the design is totally an original from my wife. We both like modern with MIRO one of my favorites. Calder is up there too, I guess it is the shapes and whimsy that get me. So it wasn’t any particular piece but influenced by Calder’s Jewelry and Miro’s Paintings.
The design of the cabinet changed many times, I am really new at doing veneering and wanted to stretch myself . The doors and drawer fronts are veneered. Getting enough of the same veneer is hard, I ordered off the internet and what I got wasn’t what I expected. That influenced the design, the sides are solid wood originally I had planned for veneer. You can see the veneer of the drawers isn’t perfect because that was all could do with what I had. That is also why I decided to make the knobs stand out. I took a couple of days taping the handles on in many positions before going with the way they are.

Please tell us more about your homemade foot-powered scroll saw. Those of us with more time than money would like to know how you built it. A whole blog on it would be appreciated.
